What is Linux ?
Linux or GNU / Linux is a free operating system that is very popular for computers, the term Linux or GNU / Linux (GNU) was also used as a reference to the whole Linux distro (Linux distribution), which is included within other programs supporting the operating system. Initially, Linux was made, developed, and is used by devotees only. Linux now has the backing of large companies like IBM and Hewlett Packard. Linux is widely distributed for free under the GNU General Publications License (GPL), which means the source code for Linux is also available to the public.
History of Linux
The name Linux is a unique combination of its creator's name and the name of the target operating system (UNIX). It all started with an operating system called Minix. Minix was made by Professor Andrew Tanenbaum. Minix is a Unix-like operating system that works on a PC.
Torvald is a student at the University of Helsinki are using Minix. Although quite good, he has not considered adequate Minix. Then in 1991 he made an operating system which is a UNIX clone, named Linux.
As with Minix, Linux does not use any code from the commercial UNIX vendors, so Torvalds linux distribution on the internet freely and for free.
On October 5, 1991, Torvalds posted on the newsgroup comp.os.minix operating system. He announced that the Linux source code is available and ask for help other programmers to participate in developing it. ? When that Linux is still half-baked, this operating system can only run a little UNIX commands, such as bash, gcc, and gnu-make.
When Linux 1.0 was launched in 1994, this operating system has been quite stable and has many features, such as preemptive multitasking (the ability to share CPU resources for many applications) and symmetric multiprocessing (the ability to divide tasks among multiple CPUs).
Until recently, Linux was built by various communities and do not be surprised if a lot of Linux distributions in circulation. Starting from the paid to free, from for beginner to advanced, and usually with many Linux distributions in circulation will make people confused to choose a distro. Imagine, there are hundreds of distributions are created or even thousands.

Weaknesses of Linux
Many users who are not familiar with Linux and is still 'Windows minded'. This can be overcome with training or education to the users to get used to Linux.
Hardware support from vendors that were not too good on Linux.
The software installation process / application is not as easy as in Windows.
